Project Definition

Before choosing the solution, define the project.

A larger house. An addition. A renovation. A new home. A different property. Any of those may ultimately be the right answer. But they shouldn't be the starting assumption. HB Thompson Group begins by understanding what you are trying to accomplish, why it matters and the conditions the eventual solution needs to satisfy.

The actual project need, separated from the assumed solution.

Project Definition examines

The place.

What exists, what is valuable and what needs to change.

The people.

Who will use the place, how they live and what they need from it.

The objective.

What you are actually trying to accomplish — and why.

The conditions.

Property, zoning, existing construction, environmental conditions and other realities that influence the project.

The investment.

What should reasonably be invested and how that relates to the objective.

The timing.

When the place needs to be ready and what decisions affect that schedule.

The priorities.

What matters most and what shouldn't be compromised along the way.

The result is not a design. It's the definition the design will answer to.

The result should establish enough clarity to make the next decisions intelligently — whether that means architecture, further feasibility work, Design-Build, pursuing a different solution or deciding not to proceed.
